This red bulb onion is medium day length. The name Shonan is a region in Kanagawa Prefecture. The onion has excellent flavor with a crisp, sweet, mild pungency that makes it excellent for salads.
Annual
Approx. 280-300 seeds in packet. (A seed will vary in weight and size within a given seed lot. The number of seeds stated is only an estimate.)
Cultivation: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in late summer to early fall. Transplant seedlings in early fall or no later than mid fall. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Pull onions when skins develop and tops have fallen over (late spring). Allow the onions to dry in the open air for a few days. Cut off tops and roots. Air dry 2-3 more days. This will help to seal the onion and avoid spoiling. Onions can also be harvested at any stage before full maturity.
