 India, Hyrid |
In China an angry face is called a “bitter melon face,” and this bitter gourd/bitter melon hybrid of India makes the metaphor apt. The dark green skin of its 6”-8” fruits is covered with ridges and jagged warts, like a creased and furrowed forehead. The spindle-shaped melons taper at both ends, and overall they are narrower than a Chinese bitter melon. The India variety endears itself to growers by its early maturity and long-lasting, generous yield. The India bitter melon is popular for Indian dishes, most often prepared with potatoes and served with yogurt to offset the bitter flavor.
